Why Rio de Janerio should have the Olympics???

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

City Population: 6,100,369

Brief History: No city in South America has ever hosted the Olympics. Rio bid for the 1936, 2004, and the 2012 Olympics. Each time they were beat out.
Opinion: Hmmm...a South American Olympics sounds fun. I'd definitely be interested if Rio gets to host it. However, you gotta think of the massive population there. Unlike Tokyo, Rio's population is very concentrated.
According to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 bid committee, the bid's concept is based on four principles—technical excellence, experience of a lifetime, transformation, and supporting the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.Rio de Janeiro has full political backing and a strong popular support. The three levels of Brazilian government have guaranteed the free provision of a range of services to the bid, including security, medical services, customs, transport, immigration, and other governmental services and support.Rio de Janeiro has already approved funding of US$240 billion from the Program for Growth Acceleration .The host city of the Games will be announced at the 121st IOC Session (which will also be the 13th Olympic Congress) to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009. The 2016 Summer Paralympics will be held in the same city and organized by the same committee.

Chicago extends lead for 2016 Games

Chicago widened its lead against its rivals for the 2016 Olympic Games in an index compiled by Around the Rings, an influential Web site that tracks the business of the games.

The city scored 80 out of 110 points in the latest ranking published by Ed Hula, editor of the Atlanta-based site. Madrid jumped into the No. 2 slot with a score of 78, ahead of Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, which both scored 76.

Chicago scored 77 in the previous assessment, in September 2008, just one point ahead of the other three cities at 76. It’s the first ranking by Around the Rings since visits to each city by an International Olympic Committee evaluation team in April.

Chicago improved its marks in legacy, marketing, public support and bid operation. Madrid rose in bid operation, marketing and accommodation.

Rio’s scores dropped in accommodation, games cost and transportation but saw improvements in security and public support.

Tokyo saw its marks drop for marketing, games cost and ambience but improve for security, transportation and accommodation.

Representatives for the four cities will be in Lausanne, Switzerland, next week to meet with IOC members in the last presentation before the committee votes in October to award the games.

And the winner is....??? Race for the 2016 Olympics...

Madrid

Rio de Janerio

Tokyo

Chicago

In race for the 2016 Olympics
Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo are the four cities bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The winner will be decided on October 2, 2009.The 2008 Beijing Olympics may be fresh in sports fans' memories, but the host for the 2016 Summer Games will be named on October 2, 2009 at the International Olympic Committee's meeting in Copenhagen.Seven down to fourThe list of cities entering official bids started at seven: Baku, Chicago, Doha, Madrid, Prague, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. That septet was cut to a quartet in the first elimination stage with the Azerbaijan capital Baku, Qatari capital Doha and Czech capital Prague.Rio is the only candidate in a country which hasn't yet hosted the event, but it is no stranger to big sports competitions, having successfully staged the XV Pan American Games last year. A winning bid for Rio would also mark the first time for the event to be held in South America. Chicago and Tokyo have both won previous bids—Chicago's bid, however, was transferred to St. Louis to coincide with the World's Fair that year (1904)—and the Japanese capital served as host to the Games in 1964. A Madrid win would come 24 years after Barcelona bore that torch for Spain's first Olympics in 1992.In the meantime, you can enjoy more statistics . And if 2016 is too far ahead, and your team-spirit cravings need more immediate satisfaction, you can start planning right away for any of these upcoming global sports events after the jump:-XXIX Summer Olympics, hosted by Beijing, China, this August. -XXI Winter Olympics, hosted by Vancouver, Canada, in February 2010. -World Cup in Soccer, hosted by South Africa in June/July 2010.-1st Youth Olympic Games, hosted by Singapore in August 2010.-XVI Pan American Games, hosted by Guadalajara, Mexico, in October 2011.-XXX Summer Olympics, hosted by London, England, in July/August 2012.-XXII Winter Olympics, hosted by Sochi, Russia, in February 2014. -World Cup in Soccer, hosted by Brazil in 201

CHICAGO IN THE OLYMPICS

As olympics birds get close, all countries all over the world try to be the host country. Because being a host country for the olympics means to get tourists to have a chance to introduce the country to others, to put more money in the budget of the goverment. Because of all these reasons,at the season of olympcs, a big competiton starts between the countries. One of the bif competitor countries is of course USA, and one of the big competitor cities in the USA is Chicago. What makes chicago one of the strongest competitors?
Chicago is a very big and wealthy city that can provide a comfortable place to stay, wonderful places to see for tourists, and enough olympics areas for the olympics bids. At the same time, Chicago is a very rich city to provide insurance to the people who will come to watch the olympics bids.

Do You think Chicago would make a good Olympic host city...

I have the same reservation about the Olympics as many people in Chicago.Debt, congestion, unused leftover facilities etc....Much of the debt comes from bad business and marketing decisions and congestion from a city not being big enough for its infrastructure to handle an Olympic-sized event. The state and city finances has enough trouble already. The Olympics doesn't bring us anything but debt, crowds, garbage and the like
